About Moses Sumney
Singer-songwriter Moses Sumney is critically acclaimed for his thoughtful writing, ethereal vocals, and layered soundscapes that deliberately defy categorization. ∙ Growing up in Southern California and his parents’ native Ghana, he wrote more than 100 a cappella songs before teaching himself to play guitar and piano as a young adult. ∙ In 2013, TV on the Radio producer Dave Sitek gave Sumney the 4-track he used to record his debut EP, 2014’s Mid-City Island. ∙ He sang and coproduced “Title of This Song” on the 2013 compilation Song Reader, featuring various artists’ recordings of tunes from Beck’s book of sheet music. ∙ Pop star Solange asked her friend Sumney to sing backup on “Mad (feat. Lil Wayne),” from her 2016 album, A Seat at the Table. ∙ The 2017 debut Aromanticism and 2020’s græ were both included in year-end “best of” lists by Pitchfork, NPR, and The New York Times.
