About Martin Ford

Martin Ford is a familiar figure to visitors to London as the organist and director of music at the Guards' Chapel near Buckingham Palace. An unusually versatile figure, he has pursued a career ranging from organ performance to choral direction, piano accompaniment, and teaching in several of these fields. Ford studied music at Oxford University, graduating with first-class honors, and went on for a master's degree at the Royal College of Music in London as an organist. He also studied piano accompaniment with Nigel Clayton and participated in master classes with Graham Johnson, Roger Vignoles, and Malcolm Martineau at the Oxford Lieder Festival. Ford embarked on a sequence of assistantships at some of England's premier churches: he held organ scholarships at Southwark Cathedral and Magdalen College, Oxford, and served as assistant organist at St. Martin in the Fields church (from 2009 to 2011) and Westminster Abbey (from 2011 to 2015), and as sub-organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. As of 2020, Ford was organist and director of music, conducting a 12-member choir at the Guards' Chapel, also known as the Royal Military Chapel, St. James Park. He has performed solo organ recitals at St. Paul's Cathedral and Saint-Sulpice church in Paris and has served as an accompanist on various broadcasts on BBC television and radio. Ford appeared at Westminster Abbey during the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and he was heard accompanying the Westminster Abbey Choir in the BBC television documentary Music and Monarchy. Ford serves as accompanist to the Vasari Singers chamber choir and to various solo vocalists, including soprano Jenni Harper. Ford's album releases include two recordings as organist with the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, and a Christmas album as the pianist with the Vasari Singers. In 2020, he appeared as the organist on the Vasari Singers' choral recital Heaven Full of Stars. ~ James Manheim
