About Major Murphy
Major Murphy make a laid-back brand of harmony-rich indie rock with a psychedelic bent and an AM pop sensibility. Their first long-player, No. 1, saw release in 2018 and was followed in 2021 by Access, which took more influence from guitar-centric classic rock palettes.
Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Major Murphy formed in 2015 behind the songwriting of singer/multi-instrumentalist Jacob Bullard. Jacki Warren (synth, bass, vocals) and Brian Voortman (drums) rounded out the lineup. A home-recorded debut EP called Future Release was issued by Winspear later in 2015, and the trio soon committed to performing live regularly and went on their first tours. Winspear released the follow-up EP On & Off Again in July 2017. That November, Major Murphy previewed a more vibrant sound with "Mary," the lead track off their full-length debut. Recorded mostly live in the studio with producer/mixer Mike Bridavsky, No. 1 arrived on Winspear in March 2018.
The band's second album, Access, got the endorsement of Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield, who wrote the project bio. Recorded with added fourth member Chad Houseman (guitar, keys, percussion) between late 2018 and early 2020 at Bridavsky's studio in Bloomington, Indiana, Access saw release in April 2021. ~ Marcy Donelson
