About Luys Milan
Valencia-based Spanish composer Luis de Milán (ca. 1500-ca. 1561) was the principal exponent of the Spanish vihuela, publishing the Libro de música de vihuela de mano intitulado El maestro (1535), the first book of music for that instrument. Milán's earliest known court appointment wasn't until 1538 when entered the court of the Duke of Calabria, but his vihuela volume contains a dedication to King John III of Portugal, so Milán may have spent his early career there. Milán's last known publication is a literary work, El cortesano (1561), and he was one of the first composers to utilize the term "sonata."
