Lukas Foss

About Lukas Foss

Born in Germany, Lukas Foss (1922-2009) fled the Nazi regime with his family to the United States. Establishing himself with a cantata on Carl Sandburg's verse "The Prairie" (1944), Foss was swiftly recognized as an American composer of significance. In the 1950s he led the Improvisation Chamber Ensemble in Los Angeles, and later became music director for the Buffalo and Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestras, among others. Foss set new standards for regional orchestras in America and was an important teacher of composition. Foss was a very prolific composer; Time Cycle (1960) and Elegy for Anne Frank (1983) are among his best-known works.
