About Luigi Nono

Luigi Nono (1924-1990) was an Italian serialist composer who, with Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna, also participated in explorations of electronic music. Noted for his strong political interests, including active membership in the Communist Party, Nono attempted to radicalize European music, and for a time he led the avant-garde movement at Darmstadt with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Yet Nono's efforts to revolutionize music through settings of political texts produced more notoriety than actual change. Nono eventually developed an interest in the mystical music of Giacinto Scelsi, and several of his later compositions derive their methods from his compatriot's works.
