About Liam Weldon

b. 1933, Dublin, Eire, d. 28 November 1995, Dublin, Eire. Singer-songwriter Liam Weldon became closely identified with the plight of Ireland’s gypsy community during his long playing career. Only sporadically recorded, some of his best work emerged in the 70s and, with French flute player Pol Huello, the 80s and 90s. His fans included Christy Moore, who paid tribute to his influence after his death in 1995 by stating ‘Liam was emotionally involved with singing. There was always an edge.’ Like Moore, Weldon’s best songs documented the struggles of a disenfranchised community.
