Joshua Mbewe, better known as Laxcity, makes expressive, intricately detailed downtempo electronic music. Filled with crisp drums, mysterious voices, and imaginative sound design, the songs on releases such as 2018's Catharsis are healing and comforting while reflecting a wide range of turbulent emotions.
Mbewe was born in Zambia and moved to England when he was nine years old. He started playing drums and keyboards in his church when he was young and later began making electronic music on his computer. Laxcity, his self-titled debut EP, appeared in 2016, followed by Introspection in 2017. In 2018, Mbewe traveled to Montreal and played his first concert, opening for Robotaki and Said the Sky. Catharsis, his debut album, was released by Majestic Casual at the end of the year, including guests such as emawk and Lani Rose. Laxcity's Purity EP was then released by ALT:Vision Records in 2019. ~ Paul Simpson
