About Lang Lang

Chinese virtuoso Lang Lang is one of the world’s best-known concert pianists, celebrated for bringing a youthful flair—and audience—to classical music. ∙ A child prodigy who won several international contests as a teenager, he won critical acclaim at age 17 while filling in for pianist André Watts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. ∙ Lang Lang and the Prague Symphony Orchestra were featured in composer Alexandre Desplat’s Golden Globe-winning score for the 2006 period drama The Painted Veil. ∙ Seven of his releases have hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart, including 2007’s Grammy-nominated Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 4. ∙ In 2008, he appeared at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics, and the following year, he performed at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony honoring Barack Obama. ∙ He has accompanied Hans Zimmer, Herbie Hancock, Metallica, and Pharrell Williams on the Grammy Awards stage, and Hancock said of his playing, “He never ceases to touch your heart.” ∙ The French, German, and Chinese governments have awarded him their highest civilian and cultural honors, and he was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2013. ∙ A film adaption of Lang Lang’s memoir, Journey of a Thousand Miles, was announced in 2020, with Hollywood veteran Ron Howard slated to direct.
