About Kronos Quartet

Few groups have so successfully bridged the gap between classical and popular music as the Kronos Quartet. Expanding the parameters of its repertoire to include compositions from rock, jazz, and world music, it has recorded a body of work virtually unparalleled in its dedication to innovation and range of expression. The group began attracting widespread notice with their eponymous 1986 debut for Nonesuch, which raised many eyebrows via its string-quartet cover of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. In the years to follow, the Kronos Quartet remained several steps ahead of their contemporaries, commissioning pieces from modern composers (Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, John Zorn), performing the works of tango innovator Astor Piazzolla and free jazz visionary Ornette Coleman, and exploring music traditions around the globe. As of 2022, the Kronos Quartet had commissioned more than 1000 works and arrangements.
