About Kelis
Although she’s best known for the sexy 2000s R&B hits “Milkshake” and “Bossy,” singer, songwriter, and certified chef Kelis has served up a smorgasbord of sounds—including soul, hip-hop, jazz, and dance—over the course of her career. • Kelis Rogers was raised in Harlem; her mother was a chef and a fashion designer, while her father was a minister and a jazz musician. She graduated from Manhattan’s acclaimed LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. • A friend introduced Kelis to Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, the production duo known as The Neptunes. The hitmakers featured the young singer on Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s 1999 single “Got Your Money.” • The Neptunes produced and wrote the bulk of Kelis’ 1999 debut album, Kaleidoscope. The single “Caught Out There” was a Top 10 R&B hit. • Kelis’ steamy third album, 2003’s Tasty, spawned the No. 3 pop hit “Milkshake,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The Neptunes had originally offered the song to Britney Spears. • Her fourth album, 2006’s Kelis Was Here, includes the single “Bossy,” featuring rapper Too Short. The single went double platinum, and the album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. • In 2008, Kelis graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. She subsequently hosted the Cooking Channel series Saucy and Sweet and published a cookbook, My Life on a Plate. • Kelis embraced dance-pop on her 2010 album Flesh Tone, then collaborated with TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek for 2014’s Food, a more organic-sounding soul album heavy on food imagery.
