The collective Keleketla! is a musical collaborative project between Coldcut and a menagerie of South African musicians, as well as several international guests. Encompassing a variety of jazz, hip-hop, and club sounds, their genre-bending eponymous album arrived in 2020.
Instigated by Keleketla! Library founders Rangoato Hlasane and Malose Malahlela, the duo were asked by the charity In Place of War which music producers they would most like to work with for a collaborative project with South African musicians, with the pair picking Ninja Tune founders and cut-up practitioners Coldcut. Taking up the invitation, Coldcut's Jonathan More and Matt Black headed to South Africa in 2019 for a selection of recording sessions at Soweto's Trackside Studios with the likes of rapper Yugen Blakrok, malombo jazz artist Sibusile Xaba, jazz vocalist Nono Nkoane, and more. Black and More then returned to London to flesh out the recordings, bringing on board Afro-beat legend Tony Allen, jazz saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, and a selection of other talent, and working their magic to create an all-inclusive mix of Afro-beat, hip-hop, jazz, malombo, and gqom. The first fruits of the project appearing in May 2020 with the release of the single "Future Toyi Toyi," and the eponymously titled album Keleketla! arrived just a few months later. ~ Rich Wilson
