Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji

About Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji

Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji (1892-1988) created some of the most technically difficult piano works of the 20th century, which in part accounts for the obscurity of much of his music. In such elaborate pieces as Le jardin parfumé, the Concerto per suonare da me solo, and the four-hour-long Opus Clavicembalisticum, Sorabji wrote counterpoint and harmonies that were spread out over multiple staves, and only the most virtuosic pianists have been able to successfully play them. Sorabji spent many years as a music critic, though he retired in 1945 and focused on composition until his death at age 96.
