About Joy

Built around the production duo of David Tolan (b. 3 May 1967, Dublin, Eire; programming, percussion) and Ali Fletcher (b. Alistair Fletcher, 27 May 1968, Newcastle, England; drums, programming), the Joy additionally number Gavin O’Neill (b. 20 September 1965, Worcester, England; vocals) Denise Johnson (b. 31 August 1966, Manchester, Lancashire, England; vocals) and Andy Tracey (b. 11 September 1965, Harehills, Leeds, Yorkshire, England; guitar). Johnson is best known to club-goers for her contributions to Primal Scream’s epoch-making Screamadelica, but Tolan also produced her debut solo single. He and O’Neill had initially worked together in Perspex Spangles, while Fletcher had been part of the Canoe Club and Tall Americans. The Joy took their name as a revolt against the rejection offered to them by record companies in their early days. They played their first gig at the Buzz Club in Manchester in September 1992, and kicked off their new contract with Compulsion Records in 1994 with a re-release of ‘Shine’, previously a minor club hit in April 1993 for Playground Records.. As Joy Productions Tolan and Fletcher have also contributed remixes, most notably for the Dub Disciples’ ‘Hyperphoria Parts One And Two’.
