About Josetxu Obregón

Spanish cellist Josetxu Obregón is a specialist in early music, both as a performer on Baroque cello and as director of the period ensemble La Ritirata. A native of Bilbao, Obregón studied modern cello, chamber music, and conducting while attending college in Spain and Germany, then pursued graduate studies in Baroque cello at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Lucia Swarts, while taking private lessons with Anner Bylsma. Obregón has taught cello at the Madrid Royal Conservatory and performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the European Union Baroque Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, L'Arpeggiata, Le Concert des Nations, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, among many other ensembles. He is also the cellist of the Salzburger Haydn Quintett. He has performed on BBC Radio 3, NPS Radio 3 Holland, and Spanish National Radio and Television, and recorded for Verso and Glossa. Obregón plays a 1740 cello by Sebastian Klotz, and he has performed on the Spanish Royal Collection's 1700 Stradivarius cello.
