About Jorge Medina

Jorge Medina is a singer and songwriter best known for his two decades as the lead vocalist of the legendary Mexican grupero La Arrolladora Banda el Limón de René Camacho. His gentle, slightly grainy tenor is equal parts passion, tenderness, and seduction. During his long tenure with the group, they scored 11 Top Five albums on the Regional Mexican charts -- half of them hit number one -- with ten more landing inside the Top 15 at Latin Albums. In addition, they placed six singles in the Top 200, and dozens of tracks at Mexican and Latin radio. Since leaving the group in 2017, he has assumed a solo career. Medina was born in 1974 in Sinaloa (he currently resides in Mazátlan). He began singing with groups before he was a teenager, including long stints with Tiburon, and between 1992 and 1996, with Banda Nueva Ilusion before Camacho hired him in late 1996 to front his own newly formed Arrolladora Banda el Limón (an outgrowth of his own split with the La Original Banda el Limón de Salvador Lizárraga). With his good looks and charismatic personality, Medina was an instant hit with both concert audiences and the record-buying public. The singer regularly appeared on television as a spokesperson for the band and enjoyed superstardom not only in Mexico, but throughout Central America and the United States. Medina performed some 4,500 concerts with the best-selling group during those two decades. To deal with the pressure of being away from his wife and family, he drove himself harder and drank to excess in order to relax. After entering a deep depression, and under doctor's orders to rest, he took a two-month leave of absence that ultimately resulted in him leaving the Camacho band in the early summer of 2017 -- his former employer found out via social media, causing a rift between the two men. After more recuperation, Medina was encouraged by his family and producer Chuy Lizárraga to undertake a solo career. Signed to Fonovisia, he and the producer entered the latter's Estudio 13 in August to begin recording and to form a new band. The pair enlisted tracks from top songwriters including Horacio Palencia and Calibre 50's Edén Muñoz, Omar Tarazón, Max Peraza, and Espinoza Paz. Four pre-release singles and videos were issued between the end of the year and the spring of 2018. While each track charted at digital streaming services and terrestrial radio, the videos combined accounted for millions of views. (The radio single "Al Cien y Pasadito" spent 14 weeks at the top of the Mexican National Chart.) In late September, Medina released the long-player ¿Así o Más Claro? and began touring Mexico with his new band. ~ Thom Jurek
