About Jon Batiste

Bandleader of the acclaimed jazz group Stay Human, Jon Batiste is a musician, composer, and entertainer also known for his award-winning music for the animated movie Soul. ∙ Formed in the early 2000s, Batiste’s Juilliard-born group Stay Human recorded their 2011 debut EP, My N.Y., entirely on a New York City subway. ∙ In 2011, he was cast in a starring role in the Emmy-nominated TV series Treme. ∙ Beginning with Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer, he is credited as a composer and/or musical performer on more than 15 film and TV scores and soundtracks since 2012. ∙ He first entered the Billboard 200 with Stay Human’s full-length debut, Social Music, which also topped the Jazz Albums chart in 2014. ∙ Stay Human was chosen as the house band for TV’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, with Batiste as musical director, in 2015. ∙ In honor of his contributions to contemporary jazz, the American Jazz Museum presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. ∙ He’s been nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best American Roots Performance (2018), Best New Age Album (2020), and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album (2020). ∙ In 2021, along with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Batiste won the Best Original Score Golden Globe Award for Soul, the animated film that used his playing for visual inspiration.
