About John Frusciante
John Frusciante’s stature as an alt-rock guitar god is measured not just by the fact that he plays in one of the biggest bands in the world, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but that he’s left the group and been eagerly welcomed back—twice. Born in New York in 1970, Frusciante spent his childhood bouncing around the country before settling in California at age nine. Raised on equal doses of SoCal punk and classic rock, he began his first tour of duty with the Peppers in 1988, as the replacement for the late Hillel Slovak. Bringing a more lyrical, psychedelic style to the punk-funk pranksters, Frusciante helped steer the Peppers to megastardom with 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik. However, his discomfort with celebrity drove him out of the band and into the throes of heroin addiction, an experience that yielded two albums of unsettling lo-fi art-folk (1994’s Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-shirt and 1997’s Smile From the Streets You Hold). A freshly sober Frusciante rejoined the Peppers for 1999’s blockbuster Californication but left again in 2007 to focus on his revitalized solo career. Over a flurry of 21st-century releases, he has embarked on a genre-agnostic journey through traditional singer/songwriter confessionals, electro-shocked indie rock, and electronic experimentation, as well as full-album collaborations with members of Fugazi and The Mars Volta. But Frusciante’s desire to rock out again led him back to the Peppers for 2022’s Unlimited Love, the band’s first chart-topping album since his previous tenure with the group.
