Johann Christian Fischer

About Johann Christian Fischer

Joining the Dresden court orchestra, Fischer demonstrated great skill in performing on his instrument of choice, the oboe. He became familiar with the Potsdam court of Frederick The Great during the Seven Years War and met The Mozarts at the Hague in 1765. He gave concerts in Mannheim and in Paris where he was aided by Abel and J. C. Bach. Fischer became an active participant in the Bach-Abel concerts and Bach transcribed a number of his oboe concertos for the keyboard. The Rondo from his concerto was used as the theme for numerous variations by Mozart. Emotion and phrases of pathetique emerge from the musical strains of Fischer's compositions. "Compleat Tutor for the Hautboy," ten flute sonatas, and divertimentos for two flutes capture the essential character and depth of Fischer's compositions. ~ Keith Johnson
