Joe Castro

About Joe Castro

Until the appearance of 2015's box set Lush Life: A Musical Journey, pianist, composer, arranger, producer, and bandleader Joe Castro was considered a footnote to jazz history. He issued 1957's Mood Jazz and 1960's Groove Funk Soul for Atlantic and subsequently ran and recorded for the Clover label. He was a co-billed, featured guest on Sonny Rollins and Teddy Edwards' At Music Inn/At Falcon's Lair (the latter was Castro and Doris Duke's recording studio). Eventually he left jazz to become a lounge pianist and arranger in Las Vegas. In 1992, Duke turned over 400 hours of tapes from Clover and Falcon Lair. Working with Sunnyside, son James Castro released the eight-disc boxed compilation Lush Life: A Musical Journey in 2015, resulting in a major re-appraisal of the pianist's career. A second box was released as Passion Flower: For Doris Duke in November 2020.
