Jessica 6

Named after the heroine of 1976's sci-fi classic Logan’s Run, Jessica 6 features Nomi Ruiz, Andrew Raposo, and Morgan Wiley. The trio met in late 2007 while working with Hercules & Love Affair on that group’s debut album, and after performing over 100 dates, they decided to continue working together. Before joining forces, Ruiz released a solo album, 2005’s Lost in Lust, which married her husky alto to hip-hop beats; meanwhile, Wiley and Raposo worked together in Automato, whose 2004 album was produced by the DFA. This mix of R&B, disco, and hip-hop -- along with freestyle, funk, punk, and pop -- shaped Jessica 6’s sound. They debuted with the 2009 EP Fun Girl; in mid-2011, their album See the Light arrived. ~ Heather Phares
