Essential Albums
- Candor is Jann Arden’s stock in trade, whether she’s crooning heartbreak ballads or cracking jokes onstage. Even so, the emotional frankness on her third album is a revelation. Living Under June is a sweet-sounding but gently devastating exploration of vulnerability and grace. Arden sounds gutted as she puzzles over a callous lover’s behavior on “Insensitive,” while her tribute to her parents, “Good Mother,” is heartrending in its sincerity. Combined with her direct vocals, that guilelessness makes for a powerful listen.

About Jann Arden
Since the early ’90s, Jann Arden has stirred up an eclectic musical blend combining country, classic pop, soul, folk, and other flavors, becoming one of Canada’s most respected singer/songwriters. But she’s also a multimedia figure who has branched out into TV, podcasting, books, and more. Born in Calgary in 1962, Arden started out singing cover tunes on the bar circuit, releasing her debut album, Time for Mercy, in 1993. That yielded three Canadian Top 40 hits, but it was the follow-up, Living under June, that made her a bona fide multiplatinum star, thanks to sleek, hook-laden hits like “Could I Be Your Girl?” and “Insensitive.” Armfuls of Juno awards followed. In the late 2000s, she began reaching beyond her own songs, cutting albums of covers and Christmas classics. Unafraid of sharing her experiences, she’s written a series of memoirs, and starting in 2019, she starred in the acclaimed Curb Your Enthusiasm-style TV sitcom Jann, in which she gleefully skewers her public image.
