About James Hewitt

This American composer left England at the age of twenty two. He claimed to have been taught by Haydn when he reahed New York but there was no evidence for this claim. His talents included composition, conducting, publishing, teaching and importing and he assisted in building the structure of early American musical life. Leading the orchestra at the Park Street Theatre in New York occupied part of Hewitt's energies between 1792 and 1811. He not only arranged music but composed music for ballad operas and sold musical instruments. He lived in Boston between 1811 and 1816 but worked there from 1805. Publications included over one hundred and sixty compositions of his own consisting of vocal works (about ninety one) and seventy five instrumental works (sonatas, variations and keyboard pieces). ~ Keith Johnson
