In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. iPhupho L’ka Biko is an Africanist band, based in Johannesburg. The collective was formed in 2015 by bassist and composer Nhlanhla. The members of the band met in Braamfontein where they frequently interacted in creative, social and academic spaces. Tell us why you chose this song. “UThixo Ukhona” 2015, a year which saw a rise in youth’s collective consciousness in South Africa through the “Fees Must Fall” movement. Uthixo Ukhona came from the movement and was arranged by Nhlanhla Ngqaqu, with Koketso Poho on vocals. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? - 2016, The Stellenbosch Conservatoire Music Competition jazz category award. - 2018, One highlight, selling out the Wits Theatre in a solo show. - 2022, Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? - To release a debut album - To have an African tour which will move from Cape to Cairo, Morocco to Madagascar - We also intend honouring invitations to other parts of the world including, America, Asia, Europe and more
