Iguana Death Cult
About Iguana Death Cult
Delivering a bold and playfully snarky brand of rock & roll that draws from both current and vintage garage rock, surf guitar, old school punk, and indie rock, Iguana Death Cult are a band from Rotterdam who are making a name for themselves among adventurous rock fans both at home and abroad. Possessing genuine wit without seeming goofy, Iguana Death Cult mixed tough songs with expressive twang and growl on their debut album, 2017's The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life, but they showed off a more eclectic sound that found them dipping into '70s rock and pop forms on 2019's Nude Casino.
Iguana Death Cult were formed in 2015 by guitarist and singer Jeroen Reek, who grew up in Willemstad, a small town in the Netherlands. Interested in starting a band, Reek rounded up three friends who all played music but didn't know one another: Tobias Opschoor and Justin Boer, both of whom played guitar, and Arjen van Opstal, who was a drummer. It soon became obvious the band didn't need three guitarists, and Boer, who was still learning to play, was persuaded to switch to the bass. Inspired by contemporary garage punk acts like Ty Segall, Tijuana Panthers, and Thee Oh Sees, Iguana Death Cult quickly earned a local reputation with blowout live shows, and that same year they delivered their debut single, "Sirens" b/w "Seven Tongues," initially issued as a limited-edition cassette. A pair of digital tracks, "Can of Worms" and "Sad White Dreams," followed in 2016.
The band issued their first full-length release, The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life, on their own label in 2017. As positive reviews for the set began to circulate and the group relocated to Rotterdam, word about Iguana Death Cult began to spread through Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Following a memorable appearance at the South by Southwest Music Festival, the group were courted by the American indie label Innovative Leisure. The band and the label struck a deal, and Iguana Death Cult's second LP, Nude Casino, came out in October 2019. By the time fans had a chance to hear the album, the group had expanded to a quintet with the addition of keyboard player Jimmy De Kok. ~ Mark Deming
