About Hydra

Mexican progressive rock band Hydra was formed in 1995 by guitarists Luis Ortíz and Carlos Arechica, drummer Jorge Pérez, and singer Marcela Bovio. The band had its major changes during 1996 and 1997 when Pérez and Arechica left, being replaced by Roberto Quintanilla on guitar and David Vásquez on drums. In addition, bassist Miguel Villarreal joined the act temporarily. After two years of playing covers and without having a defined style, the band started to turn to progressive rock, making their own music. Their first recognition came when Hydra won at Monterrey's Festival, playing a song called "Insomnio." Hydra won the opportunity to make their first demo, which was recorded in March of 1998. In 1999, after keyboardist Alejandro Millán joined in, the band recorded their first album, called Bosquejo. In April of 2000, Hydra came in third place at the Expo Rock Festival. After April 2000, Hydra had more changes in its line up, and Miguel Villarreal was replaced by Carlos Martinez on bass. After touring intensively, they put the finishing touches on their second album, Al Phard, Al Shuja.~ Drago Bonacich
