Essential Albums
- Singer/songwriter Guy Sebastian had well and truly left Australian Idol behind by 2012, when his sixth album, Armageddon, landed with a splash. Now firmly established, he was more focused on performing the kind of music that influenced him as he was coming up, taking inspiration from artists such as Otis Redding and Sam Cooke to manifest a soulful feel. The subject matter also took on some darker, more reflective shades, inspired by Sebastian’s new role as a father and his thoughts about the kind of future his son would inherit. “Get Along” tackles intolerance in various forms, while “Big Bad World” is a promise to protect his boy from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Guy Sebastian album without some love songs—both upbeat and heartbroken—including the Lupe Fiasco collab “Battle Scars,” which deftly threads R&B with hip-hop. Even the title track is more sensitive than it first appears, with a message about taking nothing for granted and living each day like Armageddon could come tomorrow.

About Guy Sebastian
Bringing depth and grace to all he sings, Guy Sebastian lays claim to one of Australia’s most reliable voices. Born in 1981 in Klang, Malaysia, Sebastian moved to Melbourne (and later South Australia) as a child and began singing in a community church. That helped to shape his sincere vocal approach, which would earn him the top spot on the debut season of Australian Idol in 2003 and yield that year’s highest-selling Australian single in “Angels Brought Me Here.” From there he has glided across modern pop and R&B, as well as paying tribute to classic soul on 2007’s The Memphis Album. Sebastian brought his TV-forged career full circle as a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor, a coach on The Voice Australia and as Australia’s inaugural representative in the Eurovision Song Contest. Through it all, he has drawn deeply on faith and romance as core lyrical themes while delivering convincing emotional authenticity at every step.
