With a sophisticated sound that doesn't shy away from guitars or sweeping strings, effervescent K-pop six-piece GFriend began their run of consecutive Top Ten hits with their debut EP, 2015's Season of Glass. After presenting their hit full-length debut, LOL, in 2016, the group topped the Korean album chart for the first time a year later with their fourth extended play, The Awakening. Proving their staying power, 2020's Labyrinth EP became their fourth number one.
Formed by Source Music in 2015, GFriend consists of singers Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. After reaching number nine in Korea with their debut EP, January 2015's Season of Glass, GFriend quickly followed up with another EP, Flower Bud, the same year. It reached number six. They continued to climb the album chart, hitting number two with January 2016's Snowflake EP. Featuring the chart-topping single "Rough," that EP also cracked the Top Ten of Billboard's World Albums chart. Their first long-player, that July's LOL, went to number three in Korea, while also charting in Japan.
GFriend came back in 2017 with another number one single, "Navillera," from the EP The Awakening, their first number one album. They followed it up with EPs Parallel (August 2017) and their sixth EP, Time for Moon Night (April 2018). The latter returned them to the number one spot on the album chart. In the meantime, they launched their first headlining tour, and later that year, the Sunny Summer EP took them to number two. The group's second album, Time for Us, saw release in January 2019. It went to number two at home and, like LOL, number 55 in Japan. July then brought the chart-topping EP Fever Season, and they issued the Japanese album Fallin' Light on King Records in November of that year. It went all the way to number seven in Japan.
Still going strong after five years together, GFriend released two more EPs, Labyrinth and Song of the Sirens, in 2020. ~ Marcy Donelson
