About Garotos Podres

Formed in the working-class region of the Grande ABC, the cities joined to the metropolitan-area of São Paulo, the Garotos Podres started playing punk rock and Oi! (slower punk rock style). The first recording was the LP Mais Podres Do Que Nunca, which sold up to 50,000 copies, a landmark then for an independent and punk rock production in Brazil. The album is considered a classic of the genre and encouraged several new bands to follow. Two of its songs were vetoed by censorship: "Johnny" and "Vou Fazer Cocô." "Anarquia, Oi!," "Johhny," "Fernandinho Viadinho," and others made it to the national radio. In 1995, the Garotos Podres toured Europe. In October 1997, they released the CD Com a Corda Toda (Paradoxx). This was their fourth one and was more commercial; it was centered in ska, but always used strong social thematics like in "Aos Fuzilados da CSN," which is about the killing of workers by the police in a confrontation during a strike at the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional. The group had several changes of formation: from 1983 to 1997, Sukata replaced Godo (bass) and Português replaced Maurício (drums), and from 1997 to 1998, Nunes substituted Português. ~ Alvaro Neder
