Portuguese "cathartic" black metal outfit Gaerea produce a particularly anguished form of the genre, combining it with elements of hardcore and sludge metal with a hefty dose of emotional outpouring. The band issued their debut album, Unsettling Whispers, independently in 2018. Gaerea inked a deal with Season of Mist ahead of 2020's acclaimed Limbo, and they continued to refine their misanthropic and cinematic black metal style on 2022's Mirage.
