About Frank Bennett
Like Richard Cheese or the Mike Flowers Pops, Frank Bennett made his name performing alternative rock hits in the style of lounge music -- namely his namesakes Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The trend that would eventually result in Pat Boone's album of heavy metal covers In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy was only just kicking off in the early 1990s when Bennett (born David Wray) was performing in a tribute band called the Rat Pack as "Tony Sinatra." His interest in music had started when his older sister's boyfriend, in an attempt to buy the young boy's silence about what the two were up to, gave him a drum kit. As an adult he switched to the saxophone, which he would later play on his albums, and then vocals with groups like the Zarsoff Brothers, the Tabasco Brothers, Ross Wilson's Rock House, the Chris Turner Band, and Hard Word -- a Blues Brothers tribute band. He also hosted TV1's retro video music show Vinyl Revival for four years while recording his two albums of lounge covers. Five O'Clock Shadow, released in 1996, focused on grunge and included versions of Pearl Jam's "Better Man" and Radiohead's "Creep," the latter of which sneaked into radio station JJJ's Hottest 100 poll of that year at number 95. His 1998 album, Cash Landing, went back to the '80s for inspiration and songs like the Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)" and Australian Crawl's "Beautiful People"." He also supported kindred spirits Tom Jones and Burt Bacharach on their Australian tours and had a cameo in the movie The Dish. ~ Jody Macgregor
