About Everything But the Girl

Alt-pop duo Everything But the Girl found their greatest success toward the end of their 18-year run, when Todd Terry’s remix of their 1994 single “Missing” became a global smash. Their electronic-flavored follow-up, 1996’s Walking Wounded, marked their highest-charting album in the US and the UK.

• Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt started Everything But the Girl while they were classmates at the University of Hull in Northern England. Each had recorded solo material before they teamed up in 1982.
• Their first album as Everything But the Girl was 1984’s Eden, which was steeped in jazz and bossa nova—“sophisti-pop,” as it has become known. The album went Top 20 in the UK.
• Everything But the Girl explored various influences over the years, including the jangly pop of their 1985 album Love Not Money (No. 10 in the UK); the symphonic sound of 1986’s Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, recorded with an orchestra (No. 22 in the UK); and the acoustic-instruments-with-programmed-drums aesthetic of 1988’s Idlewild (No. 13 in the UK). The latter album included a version of “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” that reached No. 3 on the UK singles chart.
• The group boosted its profile in 1994 with the acoustic-based Amplified Heart, which included contributions from guitarist Richard Thompson, bassist Danny Thompson, and drummer Dave Mattacks. The album hit No. 20 in the UK and just missed the Top 40 in the US. Todd Terry’s remix of the single “Missing” was an international hit that reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and No. 3 in the UK.
• Everything But the Girl returned in 1996 with Walking Wounded, which reached No. 4 in the UK and cracked the Top 40 in the US. Their final album, 1999’s Temperamental, blended folk, jazz, pop, and electronica. It went Top 20 in the UK.
• The duo last performed live in 2000. Thorn and Watt, who are married to each other, have each released solo albums in the years since, though they have said they don’t plan to revive Everything But the Girl.
