About Elway Bevin

A Welsh composer who served in Wells Cathedral and at St-Augustine-the-Less in Bristol, Bevin was also indebted to Godfrey Goodman, who later became the Bishop of Gloucester, for his appointment to the Chapel Royal. Bevin's composition "The Dorian or Short Service" and his theoretical work "A Briefe and Short Instruction in the Art of Musicke" indicate the body of his important work. The latter contained a number of examples of canon but in it Bevin did not accomplish what he set out to do -- teach the new student. ~ Keith Johnson
