Domenico Mazzocchi

About Domenico Mazzocchi

Mazzocchi served in Rome for the Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini between 1621 and 1638. He was not only patronized by the Cardinal but by Pope Urban VIII as well. Mazzocchi received a lifelong commitment and benefice from the Pope. Though he composed at least one opera the greatest appeal found in his music was discoverable in the chamber works. They were characteristically expressive and synthesized old and new techniques. His vocal arrangements for intimate settings were his most elegant contrivances including the genres of motets, sonnets, dialogues and madrigals. Mazzocchi also composed several oratorios. ~ Keith Johnson
