About Dave Brubeck
At age four, Dave Brubeck started taking piano lessons from his mom, who had trained to be a concert pianist. ∙ Growing up working on his family's 45,000-acre California cattle ranch, he initially studied veterinary medicine in college. ∙ While serving in the Army during World War II, he formed and led the first racially integrated military jazz troupe, The Wolfpack Band. ∙ In 1954, Brubeck became just the second jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time, as the magazine ran an article on the genre’s growing popularity. ∙ The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 1959 LP Time Out, which features the classics “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” was the first jazz album to sell more than 1 million copies. ∙ “Take Five” has been covered by The Specials, Al Jarreau, Stevie Wonder, Chet Atkins, and The String Cheese Incident. ∙ In 1996, Brubeck received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
