About Craig Taborn

Craig Taborn is a pianist, bandleader, and sideman. His distinctive style -- as evidenced by his 2011 ECM debut, Avenging Angel -- is informed by jazz masters of the instrument from Duke Ellington and Cecil Taylor to Thelonious Monk and Sun Ra. 2017's Daylight Ghosts revealed Taborn's diverse aesthetic interests, from free-leaning group improvisations to ruminative chamber pieces and languid soundscapes, all in a quartet setting. He issued the Transitory Poems in 2019 from a live duo with pianist Vijay Iyer. In 2020, Octopus appeared from Pyroclastic, a record of a live 2016 duet with pianist Kris Davis. The following year, Taborn digitally released 60 x Sixty -- 60 pieces of 60 seconds each, meant to be played in any order in an hour. In late 2021, ECM issued the live Shadow Plays, an improvised recital recorded at Vienna's Konzerthaus in March 2020.
