Coope Boyes & Simpson

About Coope Boyes & Simpson

Setting lyrics about modern social issues to melodies based on traditional pub songs, Northumberland-based a cappella trio Coope, Boyes & Simpson expanded on the centuries-old, topical-song traditions of Northern England. Representing the combined efforts of Barry Coope, Jim Boyes, and Lester Simpson, Coope, Boyes & Simpson gained a national British following when BBC Radio One host/producer Andy Kershaw commissioned them to write and record songs for his series Kershaw Comes Home. Their debut album, Funny Old World, released in 1994, was named Roots Album of the Year by Q magazine. Coope, Boyes & Simpson's work with Peace Concerts Passendale has inspired numerous songs based on recollections of World War I. Vocalist Barry Coope died on November 6, 2021 at the age of 67. ~ Craig Harris
