The anonymous German DJ and producer Claptone is a leader of the tech house world known for wearing a golden plague-doctor mask. • Though Claptone appears as a solo artist, he sometimes performs at more than one venue at a time, leading fans to speculate that there may be at least two individuals behind the project. • Claptone arrived on the scene in 2012 with the four-track EP She Loves You. The bass-driven melodies and funky rhythms set the project’s tone, while 2013’s “No Eyes,” featuring JAW, became Calptone’s breakout hit. • Various indie-rock artists—including Peter Bjorn and John, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Boxer Rebellion singer Nathan Nicholson—appear on Claptone’s 2015 debut album, Charmer. • With 2018’s Fantast, Claptone brought in more organic textures and moody emotions.
