Singer Chris de Burgh is best known for his 1986 soft-rock ballad “The Lady in Red,” a worldwide hit that reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 3 in the US. • De Burgh got started singing for guests in the hotel his family owned in County Wexford, Ireland. • He signed his first record deal in 1974 and the same year released his debut, Far Beyond These Castle Walls. • De Burgh’s second album, 1975’s Spanish Train and Other Stories, landed in the upper reaches of the UK albums chart and yielded the Irish No. 1 single “A Spaceman Came Travelling.” • Though he found some success in Norway in the late ’70s, de Burgh’s albums drew little attention elsewhere until the ’80s, when he began to reach the charts in the UK and the US.
