About Charles Bobo Shaw

After drumming with soul saxophonist Oliver Sain, singers Ike & Tina Turner, and bluesman Albert King, Charles "Bobo" Shaw moved to St. Louis, where he co-founded the Black Artists Group. There he met and played with Oliver Lake as well as playing in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. In the early '70s, he formed his band the Human Arts Ensemble, debuting with Whisper of Dharma in 1973, followed a year later by Under the Sun. In 1974 Shaw relocated to New York, where he recorded with Frank Lowe (Fresh, The Flam) and Lester Bowie (Fast Last, Rope-A-Dope) before reviving the Human Arts Ensemble for P'nkj'zz (1977) and Junk Trap (1978). He subsequently played with the St. Louis Creative Ensemble and Bowie's punk funk group Defunkt. ~ TiVo Staff
