In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Singing is the only thing I ever wanted to do. At six years old, my family could hear me singing my way home from school. Sinatra and these gorgeous arrangements take me there. Berlin Cabaret songs broke new ground in what could be sung, and Costello’s first songs are radical new ways of telling stories. Tell us why you chose this song. “Lush Life” Written by Billy Strayhorn in mid 1930's, the intricate harmonies, elaborate structure and world-weary, bittersweet lyrics make it an almost impossible vocal challenge. How to capture all the subtle beauty? I loved, just loved singing it.
