About Baroness
Brandishing a sophisticated, atmospheric take on pulse-quickening metal, Baroness emerged from Savannah, Georgia in 2003. Fronted by versatile singer/guitarist John Baizley (whose elaborate artwork graces each color-themed Baroness album), the ensemble first revealed their adventurous side through the patient post-rock vibes of “Rays On Pinion,” which opened their 2007 debut LP, Red Album. Their sound broadened from there to include rollercoaster prog rock and even spindly instrumental folk on 2012’s Yellow & Green, while gauzy synth notes heralded the band’s Grammy-nominated 2015 throttler “Shock Me.” With members coming and going over the years, Baizley has been the sole mainstay, shoring up his earnest vocals in order to quest into new territory all the time. That includes an openly melodic foray into trip-hop on 2019’s Gold & Grey, which still very much fits into Baroness’ prismatic universe.
