A founding member of the New Orleans hip-hop group Hot Boys, rapper B.G. helped to take his city’s sound mainstream in the ’90s. • B.G.’s career began due to a chance meeting with Cash Money Records label head Birdman at a local barbershop in 1993. • In 1996, B.G. was among the initial Cash Money Records signees, along with Lil Wayne, Juvenile, and Turk. That same year, the rapper released his debut album, Chopper City. • He formed Hot Boys with Wayne, Juvenile, and Turk in 1997. • After Cash Money Records signed a deal with Universal Music Group, B.G. released his major label debut, 1999’s Chopper City in the Ghetto. The album cracked the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and went platinum by the end of the year. • Chopper City features the Top 40 pop hit “Bling Bling.” • In 2010, B.G. released a collaborative mixtape with Lil Boosie titled 22504. • The rapper was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2012 after pleading guilty to firearm possession and obstructing justice.
