About Arve Henriksen

Known for his ethereal, Japanese-influenced trumpet playing, Arve Henriksen is in a league of his own. Like predecessor Jon Hassell, Henriksen -- who records primarily for Rune Grammofon and ECM -- utilizes embouchures, electronic atmospheres, and ambient textures to create a warm, harmonically expressive sound that reflects the natural world and sacred spaces. He is a founding member of improv-experimental jazz group Supersilent, and in collaboration with other musicians, he maintains his sonic signature while supporting other strategies and sounds. On his own recordings, such as the influential Chiaroscuro (2004), Henriksen proceeded by instinct as well as aesthetic. His Places of Worship (2013) combined improvisation, composition, and environmental strategies in evoking many of the world's holiest spaces, while Towards Language (2017) offered musical notions of pre-linguistic communication. The Timeless Nowhere (2019) was a box set of four albums (three of which were previously unreleased) recorded over the previous decade.
