Essential Albums
- Andrew Lloyd Webber's sumptuously melodic "music of the night" kicks off with a gothic synthesizer flourish for the soundtrack to Joel Schumacher's 2004 film. Starring Gerard Butler in the title role and a teenaged Emmy Rossum as Christine, The Phantom is an old-fashioned musical at heart, with sweeping romantic balladry ("All I Ask of You") and a sophisticated comedy piece ("Prima Donna"). Webber's keen pop sensibility is in full effect during Minnie Driver's credits number, "Learn to Be Lonely."
- The original 1982 Broadway production is fully realized with this recording. Its novel fusion of pop-rock and biblical storytelling brims with spiritual elation and ear-tickling twists, like how “Joseph’s Dreams”—which is dominated by narrator Laurie Beechman’s punchy presence—morphs into psychedelic Vaudeville, and the way “Those Canaan Days” eases into slinky French pop. But even with big production values, numbers like the country-tinged “One More Angel” retain the childlike simplicity of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original vision.

About Andrew Lloyd Webber
Known for some of the world’s best-loved musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber is the most commercially successful composer in history. ∙ Lloyd Webber’s early collaborations with acclaimed lyricist Tim Rice resulted in the hit shows Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. ∙ The blockbuster show Cats premiered in London in 1981. Inspired by the poems of T.S. Eliot, it was the first musical Lloyd Webber composed without a lyricist. ∙ In production since 1988, The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show in Broadway history, and the musical’s original 1986 London recording is the best-selling cast album of all time. ∙ After being knighted by Queen Elizabeth and appointed an Honorary Life Peer, Lloyd Webber served in Britain’s House of Lords as a member of the Conservative Party. ∙ He is the only composer other than Rodgers & Hammerstein to have four musicals on Broadway at the same time: Sunset Boulevard, School of Rock, Phantom of the Opera, and Cats. ∙ As the winner of an Emmy, four Grammys, one Oscar, and six Tonys, he is one of the select few people to have achieved EGOT status.
