Essential Albums
- Chamber pop, indie folk, baroque pop—however you want to label The Mysterious Production of Eggs, it's undeniably gorgeous. Andrew Bird’s vocals, all drowsy and blue, live inside arrangements that unfold like landscapes in miniature; they somehow manage to be both vast and tiny. Amid crying violins, fluttering whistles, and twinkly percussion, Bird’s cryptic wordplay worms its way deep into your consciousness. You’ll find yourself repeating odd little phrases, like “I want to drill a tiny hole into your head,” for weeks on end.

About Andrew Bird
In the late ’90s, Andrew Bird played violin on three albums by Squirrel Nut Zippers, including their Platinum-selling Hot. ∙ Following the breakup of his band Bowl of Fire, Bird reinvented himself as a solo artist with his acclaimed 2005 album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs. ∙ Bird’s breakthrough LP, Armchair Apocrypha, sold more than 100,000 copies and earned him his first late-night TV appearances. ∙ He scored the first season of the TV series Baskets at the request of its star, Zach Galifianakis. ∙ Struck by Bird’s stage presence, Fargo creator Noah Hawley cast him as a funeral director in the TV series’ fourth season. ∙ In 2019, he earned his first Grammy nomination—for the folk album My Finest Work Yet.
