Anatol Konstantinovich Liadov

About Anatol Konstantinovich Liadov

Composer Anatol Lyadov composed many short works that remain in the general keyboard repertory. Lyadov took composition classes with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and his talent impressed several members of The Five and completed his graduation requirements in 1878. He began teaching at the Conservatory, and his students included big names in the next several generations of Russian composition. Lyadov was an important early ethnomusicological researcher, publishing and arranging more than 120 folk songs. His works include more than 65 published works or sets of short works, many of which contain innovative musical devices. Serge Diaghilev commissioned Lyadov to write the ballet The Firebird but gave the commission to Stravinsky instead. Pianists Olga Solovieva and Marco Rapetti have each released complete cycles of his piano music. More than a dozen recordings of From the Apocalypse, Op. 66, were available as of the early 2020s.
