About Alyah

Alyah’s tearjerker ballads—a permanent fixture for fans of the uniquely Malay genre known as tangkap leleh—are also a linchpin of soap operas and films. Songs like “Dendam Cinta” (off movie Jwanita) and “Jutaan Purnama” (from TV drama Seribu Rindu) made her the comeback queen of many a household in the ‘10s, but discerning fans would recognise her rise on another genre of TV: the singing competition. The hijabi icon (born Noor Hasliah binti Abu Hasan in 1981) won big as runner-up on Asia Bagus 1998 and grand champion on Bintang HMI 2000. In 2006, she joined One in a Million and ranked sixth on the show. This wasn’t the last of her dalliance with reality TV either, 2012 saw her joining another singing show, Mania!, where she garnered ninth place. While she undoubtedly saw varying degrees of success with these, it’s what Alyah achieved in the intermediate years between each show—and beyond—that’s more gratifying to fans. From her work with industry greats like producer Ajai and songwriter Habsah Hassan to her short-lived stint with hip-pop group the Fabulous Cats, be it Indo-pop or R&B, Alyah delivered with aplomb. Fans agree: the launch of her 2008 self-titled album was hailed as hitting the heights of the biggest superstars of the era like Mawi. Nothing, however, could beat the potency of the Malay tearjerker: it’s catapulted her name to a local staple farther than any singing competition ever could.
