Alphonse Hasselmans

About Alphonse Hasselmans

A student of the harp who learned with his father and Kruger in Stuttgart, Desargas in Brussels, and Prumier in Paris. In the early years of his professional career Brussels was home as he was `first' harpist at the Theatre de la Monnaie. In 1877 he gave successful solo concerts in Paris and obtained positions with the orchestras of the Opera of the Conservatoire and the Paris Opera-Comique. By 1884 he was the professor of harp at the Conservatoire and completely reorganized the program. "Gitana" and "La Source" were one of the 50 compositions for the harp scored by Hasselman demonstrating his knowledge of the instrument and his virtuosity. ~ Keith Johnson
