About After 7

Featuring Melvin and Kevon Edmonds—brothers of superstar Babyface—the R&B trio After 7 notched five Top 40 pop hits from 1989 to 1995. • Kevon Edmonds began singing with Keith Mitchell while both were attending Indiana University. They soon added Kevon’s older brother Melvin and began performing around Indianapolis. • The success of Babyface led to the trio becoming a proper group and signing with Virgin Records. • Their self-titled 1989 debut album went platinum and yielded three Top 10 pop hits: “Heat of the Moment,” “Ready or Not,” and “Can’t Stop.” All three were written by Babyface and his creative partner L.A. Reid, and the latter two reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. • “Can’t Stop” earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. • In 1997, After 7 scored another Top 40 hit with the Motown-esque “Nights Like This,” off the soundtrack for The Five Heartbeats. • Babyface and L.A. Reid played less of a role in creating After 7’s 1992 sophomore effort, Takin’ My Time. The album nevertheless went gold and spawned two Top 10 R&B singles, including a medley of The Originals’ “Baby, I’m Real” and Bloodstone’s “Natural High.” • Melvin left After 7 following the group’s third album, 1995’s Reflections, which includes the Top 40 pop hit “’Til You Do Me Right.” • The group continued touring in later years with Melvin’s son taking his place. Melvin returned for the 2016 album Timeless. Three songs from the LP reached the Top 10 of Billboard’s Adult R&B chart. • Melvin died in 2019 at age 65.
